Lower Eyelids

While plastic surgery around both eyelids can be a very stressful prospect, thanks to the delicate nature of the eyes and the sensitivity of the skin, work that is required on the lower eyelid is fairly common and constitutes work that is the “bread and butter” for ophthalmologist surgeons. Not only are the lower lids subject to the same types of issues that can plague the upper eyelids, such as Ectropion, Basal Cell Carcinoma, and Blepharospasm (each of which is treated in our Miami clinic for plastic surgery), but the lower eyelid comes with its own set of maladies.

When it comes to treating lower eyelid problems, experience and expertise are the best tools a surgeon can offer a patient. Dr. Myron Tanenbaum has been studying the problems of the lower lids for over 40 years and has subsequently used that time to perfect the surgical procedures needed to fix them.

Lower Eyelid Procedures

The lower eyelids can be centers of great concern, especially as patients get older. As mentioned above, there are plenty of problems that can strike both sets of eyelids but thanks to a few structural differences between the two, the lower lids may require more customized surgeries. These procedures include:

  • Lower Lid Blepharoplasty: One of the most common anti-aging surgeries, blepharoplasties remove excess skin and fat from around the eye in order to relieve bulging and heaviness under the eye, thus getting rid of unsightly bagginess.

  • Blepharoplasty Repair: Unfortunately, some surgeries don’t always go as planned or areas get injured and need to be worked on again. Dr. Tanenbaum knows how to find and fix the problems that come due to a failed upper lid blepharoplasty.

  • Ptosis Repair: Sometimes the upper lid will droop over the eye and, in extreme cases, cover the pupil. We are able to correct this by working on the upper muscles that lift the eyelid.

  • Thyroid Disease Repair: Thyroid disease can manifest in the upper lids with scarring and swelling. Dr. Tanenbaum is not only able to correct the bulging in the upper lids that leave the eye overly exposed, but can also perform cosmetic surgery to make the eyes appear as normal as possible.

  • Skin Cancer Repair: Skin cancer often occurs when the eyelids haven’t been shielded by UV-shielding sunglasses. If any type of carcinoma appears in the upper eyelid, we can isolate those areas and treat them so that they don’t cause any lasting harm.

  • Ectropion Repair: Sometimes the upper lid will fold outward, exposing the inner lid and causing irritation. This is a condition that can affect both the upper and lower lids and is best treated with surgery.

  • Entropian Repair: The opposite of Ectropion, our team can help reverse the eyelid’s tendency to fold inward.

  • Cyst Removal: There are a number of different maladies that cause cysts and growths to appear in the upper eyelid. Whatever may be resulting in that growth, Dr. Tanenbaum can find the cause and remove the issue.

  • Lower Eyelid Retraction: There are many reasons why the perioptical skin under the eyes would sit lower on the face; this could be a result of traumatic injury or thyroid eye disease. Retracting the skin around the lower eye may require lifts near the corners or the insertion of a spacer to fill in gaps left by the drooping skin.

There are a number of types of eye disease that can manifest within or around the lower eyelids. If you suspect that there is something going on that should be checked out by a doctor, feel free to contact our office and set up an appointment. Dr. Tanenbaum is ready to share his expertise to help you find relief.
